Corona is a Riverside County City bordered on three sides by natural landscapes. It may appeal to people looking for a senior-friendly climate (its comfort index of 8.7 is one of California’s best) and lower crime rates. Data from the 2020 Census reveals seniors comprise 10.3% of the 157,000 residents, which is significantly below the 16.8% national average.
California isn’t one of the most tax-friendly states for seniors because it taxes retirement incomes and pensions — but not Social Security. However, what’s lost in taxes may be regained in general living expenses, as Corona’s average cost of living is a little lower than normal for California, and health care appears to be notably less costly than the state and national averages.
Genworth’s 2021 Cost of Care Survey records Corona’s median monthly assisted living fee as $5,250, which is average for California but above the country’s median of $4,500. Comparisons with nearby cities should provide a better idea of Southern California’s costs. Riverside’s $4,000 average is the most competitive, while San Diego’s $5,475 is costlier but not as expensive as El Camino’s $6,150.
Note: Data for Corona was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Los Angeles, was used instead.
